These Terms of Service ("Terms") are an agreement between you and Mechanica Engineering LLC, a Florida limited liability company doing business as CaseCanon ("CaseCanon", "we", "us") and govern your use of casecanon.ai and the CaseCanon search, briefs, Legal Graph, API and AI connector (together, the "Service"). By using the Service, joining early access or creating an account, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you use the Service for a law firm or other organization, you confirm you have authority to accept these Terms for it.
1. The Service
CaseCanon provides search and AI-generated summaries ("briefs") of published US court opinions, currently from Florida state courts, the US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and Florida's federal district courts. Opinions come from public sources, including CourtListener, a project of the Free Law Project. We may add, change or remove features and coverage over time.
2. Not legal advice
CaseCanon is not a law firm, does not practice law, and does not provide legal advice. Using the Service does not create an attorney-client relationship with CaseCanon. The Service is a research aid for lawyers, legal professionals and others doing legal research. You are responsible for your own legal judgment and for any advice you give to others. If you need legal advice, consult a licensed attorney.
Briefs are generated with AI and may be incomplete, inaccurate or out of date. An opinion may have been reversed, overruled, vacated or superseded after publication, and the Service may not reflect that. Before relying on or citing any authority, read the full opinion and confirm its current validity with a citator or other authoritative source. You are solely responsible for anything you file with a court or send to a client.
3. Accounts
- You must be at least 18 years old to use the Service.
- Give accurate information and keep it up to date.
- Keep your password and API keys secret. You are responsible for activity under your account and keys.
- Each account is for one person. Don't share logins. Firms that need several users should contact us about firm plans.
- Tell us promptly at contact@casecanon.ai if you suspect unauthorized use.
4. Plans and billing
- Free plan. Includes a limited number of briefs and searches per day, as described on our pricing page.
- Pro plan. Costs $29.99 per month, or $287.88 per year when billed annually, plus any applicable taxes.
- Automatic renewal. Paid plans renew automatically at the end of each billing period, and we charge the payment method on file unless you cancel before the renewal date.
- Cancellation. You can cancel anytime from your account settings. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and you keep Pro access until then.
- Refunds. Except where the law requires otherwise, payments are non-refundable, including for partial billing periods. If you believe you were charged in error, contact us within 30 days.
- Price changes. We may change prices. We'll give you at least 30 days' notice by email, and the new price applies from your next renewal after that notice. You can cancel before it takes effect.
- Payments. Payments are processed by Stripe under its own terms. If a payment fails, we may suspend paid features until it's resolved.
5. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- scrape, crawl, bulk-download or systematically copy the Service, the briefs or the Legal Graph, except through the API within your plan's limits;
- resell, sublicense or redistribute the Service or its content, or use it to build a competing product or dataset;
- use the Service or its output to train or fine-tune machine learning models without our written permission;
- get around usage limits, access controls or security measures, or share API keys;
- interfere with or overload the Service, or introduce malware;
- use the Service for anything unlawful, or to hold yourself out as providing legal services when you are not authorized to do so;
- misrepresent CaseCanon briefs as official court documents or as the work of a court.
6. API and AI connector
If your plan includes API or connector access, you may use it to integrate CaseCanon into your own tools and AI assistants for your own research, subject to your plan's rate limits and our documentation. When you connect CaseCanon to a third-party AI assistant, that assistant's provider handles the data you send it under its own terms, and CaseCanon is not responsible for the assistant's output. You must keep attribution to CaseCanon when you display briefs to others inside an application you build.
7. Content and intellectual property
- Court opinions. The text of US court opinions is generally in the public domain. Nothing in these Terms restricts your use of public court opinions obtained from other sources.
- CaseCanon materials. The briefs, their selection and arrangement, the Legal Graph, our software, design, logos and the CaseCanon name belong to CaseCanon or its licensors. We give you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use them for your own research and legal work during your subscription. You may quote reasonable excerpts of briefs in your own memos, filings and client work.
- Your content. You keep ownership of the searches and messages you submit. You give us permission to process them to provide, secure and improve the Service, as described in our Privacy Policy.
- Feedback. If you send us suggestions, we may use them without obligation to you.
8. Disclaimers
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent permitted by law, CaseCanon disclaims all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, completeness and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free, that briefs are accurate or complete, or that any opinion is still good law.
9. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, CaseCanon will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, lost business, or adverse outcomes in any legal matter, arising from your use of the Service, even if we were told they were possible. Our total liability for all claims relating to the Service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose, or $100.
Some jurisdictions don't allow certain of these limits, so some of them may not apply to you.
You agree to indemnify and hold CaseCanon harmless from claims arising out of your misuse of the Service, your violation of these Terms, or legal work you perform using the Service.
10. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Florida and applicable US federal law, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Before filing any claim, you agree to contact us at contact@casecanon.ai and try to resolve the dispute informally for at least 30 days. Any claim that is not resolved informally must be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Florida, and you and CaseCanon consent to their jurisdiction. Either party may bring a qualifying claim in small claims court.
11. Other terms
- Suspension and termination. We may suspend or close accounts that violate these Terms or put the Service at risk. You may stop using the Service and close your account at any time.
- Changes to these Terms. We may update these Terms. We'll post the new version with a new effective date and email account holders about material changes at least 30 days before they apply. Continuing to use the Service after that means you accept the changes.
- Entire agreement. These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and CaseCanon about the Service. If any part is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect. Our failure to enforce a term is not a waiver.
- Assignment. You may not transfer these Terms without our consent. We may transfer them as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of assets.
- Contact. CaseCanon is operated by Mechanica Engineering LLC, Florida. Questions about these Terms? Email contact@casecanon.ai or use our contact form.
