Privacy Policy

CaseCanon is operated by Mechanica Engineering LLC, a Florida limited liability company. This Privacy Policy explains how Mechanica Engineering LLC, doing business as CaseCanon ("CaseCanon", "we", "us"), collects, uses and shares information when you visit casecanon.ai, create an account, use our search, briefs, API or AI connector (together, the "Service"), or contact us.

1. What we collect

Information you give us

• Early access and account details: first and last name, work email, the plan you're interested in, and optionally your role.
• Contact messages: your name, email, subject and the content of your message.
• Account information: once accounts are available, your login email, password (stored only in hashed form) or the sign-in provider you choose, such as Google or Microsoft.
• Billing information: if you subscribe, Stripe collects your payment details. We receive only limited information from Stripe, such as the card brand, last four digits, billing country and payment status.
• Searches and queries: the questions you type into search, send through the API, or send through the AI connector.

Information collected automatically

• Technical data: IP address, browser and device type, pages visited, and the date and time of your visit. Our hosting provider records this in server logs.
• API usage data: which API key made a request, the endpoint called, the time, and the response status, so we can apply plan limits and fix problems.

Don't include confidential client information or other sensitive personal information in your searches or messages. CaseCanon is a research tool for published court opinions and is not designed to store privileged material.

2. How we use it

• To provide the Service: run your searches, show briefs and opinions, and operate your account, API key and connector.
• To process payments and manage subscriptions.
• To answer your messages and send the emails you asked for, such as your early access invitation.
• To send service emails, such as receipts, security notices and changes to these terms. You can't opt out of these while you have an account.
• To send occasional product updates, only if you've agreed. Every such email has an unsubscribe link.
• To keep the Service secure, prevent abuse, and enforce usage limits and our Terms of Service.
• To understand how the Service is used and improve search quality and the briefs. Where we analyze searches to improve the Service, we do so in aggregated or de-identified form where practical.
• To comply with the law.

3. Who we share it with

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We share information only in these cases:

• Service providers who help us run CaseCanon and may process data only on our instructions. These include website hosting (Netlify), form handling (Formspree), payment processing (Stripe), email delivery, cloud infrastructure, and AI model providers that help generate briefs and answer search queries.
• Your AI assistant. When you connect CaseCanon to an AI assistant, results are sent to that assistant at your request. The assistant's provider handles that data under its own privacy policy.
• Legal reasons. When we believe in good faith that disclosure is required by law, subpoena or court order, or is necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of CaseCanon, our users or others.
• Business transfers. If CaseCanon is involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, your information may transfer as part of that deal. We'll give notice before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
• With your consent, in any other case.

4. Cookies and similar technologies

The public website does not use advertising or analytics cookies. We load typefaces from Google Fonts, which means your browser sends your IP address to Google when a page loads. Once accounts are available, we will use strictly necessary cookies to keep you signed in. If we ever add analytics or other non-essential cookies, we'll update this policy and ask for your consent where the law requires it.

5. How long we keep it

• Early access sign-ups: until your account is created or you ask us to remove you.
• Contact messages: up to two years, so we can follow up on the same issue.
• Account data: for as long as your account is open, and up to 90 days after you close it, unless you ask us to delete it sooner.
• Billing records: as long as tax and accounting law requires, usually seven years.
• Server and API logs: up to 12 months.

6. Your choices and rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us to:

• tell you what personal information we hold about you and give you a copy;
• correct information that is wrong;
• delete your information, subject to records we must keep by law;
• stop sending you marketing emails.

Residents of some states, including California, Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas and Florida, may have additional rights under state privacy laws, such as the right to opt out of the sale of personal data or targeted advertising. We don't sell personal data or use it for targeted advertising. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.

To make a request, email contact@casecanon.ai or use our contact form. We may need to confirm your identity before acting on a request, and we'll respond within 45 days. If we decline your request, you may appeal by replying to our decision.

7. Security

We use industry-standard safeguards, including encryption in transit (HTTPS), hashed passwords and access controls, and we limit access to personal information to people who need it. No online service is completely secure, so please use a strong, unique password and keep your API key private. If you think your account or key has been compromised, contact us right away.

8. Children

CaseCanon is for legal professionals, students and other adults. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we'll delete it.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the Service changes. We'll post the new version here with a new effective date, and if the changes are significant we'll tell account holders by email before they take effect.
